If you’ve been playing for any length of time, you’ll have seen queen sacrifices. There are many famous sacs in chess history, and you’ve probably had occasion to engage in a few yourself (and maybe had one or two played against you). While they don’t happen every day, they are common enough that we’re all familiar with certain typical patterns.
In the fairly recent (late April) game between GMs Brandon Jacobson and Chithambaram Aravindh, however, a new pattern appears - at least one which is new to me. Maybe some of you have seen a similar idea before? If so, please let us know in the comments. That Jacobson walked into Aravindh’s haymaker, not spotting the idea two moves after his erroneous 23.bxa4, suggests that it was unfamiliar to him as well.
Have a look here, and whether it’s new or not, enjoy Aravindh’s beautiful, spectacular idea.
Nice!
