In case you’re wondering about the event, it was Chess.com’s annual Speed Chess Championship, a single elimination event in which the players fight it out in a long 5’+1” segment, a shorter 3’+1” segment, and then a relatively brief 1’+1” segment (with a 1’+1” playoff, if necessary). Only two players have won this event in the past, and you can probably guess who they are: Magnus Carlsen (the defending champion) and Hikaru Nakamura.
The round of 16 and the quarterfinals were contested online, and then this past weekend the four semi-finalists met in Paris. They performed in-person before a live audience, but still played on computers. The matches, all linked to the video coverage, ensue:
