On a Stockfish comments page, I came across a post (#33371, by dave F, dated July 9, 2022 at 22:59:36) presenting a game he ran on his own computer between Stockfish 15 and another engine called Millennium. It’s a very one-sided game, but what especially impressed dave F was that Stockfish managed to sacrifice three queens in the game. That is an unusual achievement, though none of the sacs were impressive nor necessary; it was just a fun quirk that the fastest way to win a game that could have been won in many, many ways happened to finish as it did.
Still, is it an unofficial record? One could easily surpass this in casual settings, where player A is blowing out player B, who refuses to resign. One could acquire nine queens and sacrifice them all, and I’m pretty sure it has been done, many times. (In fact, I’m pretty sure that I’ve done it myself.) But what is the record in a “real” game?
My own personal record is two queens sacrificed - and while that might not be a record I wonder if the distance between the sacs - 48 moves - might be. (Probably not - there’s probably some game where there was a queen sac early on, and then the game reached a loooooong queen ending where a second sac took place.) Anyway, readers with a sleuthing spirit are invited to find other multi-queen sac games and to please refer to them in the comments. Meanwhile, here are the two games mentioned above: Stockfish-Millennium and my adventure.
