Four more rounds were played on day two of the World Rapid Championship, and it was only Magnus Carlsen’s win with Black against Giga Quparadze in round 9 that finally gave him a small lead over the rest of the field. His score of 7.5 points gives him a minimal half-point cushion over Vladimir Fedoseev, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Vincent Keymer. Fedoseev has been holding even with Carlsen until round 9, Abdusattorov is the defending champion and playing very well, and Keymer won his first three games today against top players to find himself in medal contention. Another six players are just half a point back, and this group includes monsters like Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri. We should be in for a great finish; meanwhile, here’s a selection of games from day 2.
